Resources for healthy & active ageing

  • Ageing in the WHO European Region

In the WHO European Region, people are living longer than ever – but not always healthier. To close the gap between longevity and well-being, WHO/Europe is developing the WHO European Strategy on Ageing is Living: Promoting a Lifetime of Health and Well-being (2026–2030). This is among the 5 strategic priorities under the second European Programme of Work 2026–2030 (EPW2), reflecting a widely shared commitment to healthier, longer and more equitable lives for all in Europe.

WHO Europe has published concrete tools and guidance for local action in cities and communities to foster healthy ageing:

    Age-friendly Environments in Europe (AFEE).

  • UN Decade of healthy ageing

The United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030) is a global collaboration to improve the lives of older people, their families, and the communities in which they live. The World Health Organization was asked to lead the implementation of the Decade in collaboration with the other UN organizations.

Governments, international and regional organizations, civil society, the private sector, academia and the media are invited to actively contribute through direct action, partnering with others, and by participating in the Healthy Ageing Collaborative.

  • Knowledge for healthy ageing

A knowledge platform has been set up to support the Decade of Healthy Ageing. The Platform provides equitable and democratic access to a large amount of knowledge. To meet this need, the Platform is designed to be an inclusive, collaborative space where all knowledge relevant for the Decade can be accessed, shared, and interacted with in one place by everyone around the world.
